It’s a long way but only a few short steps from Terranuova Bracciolini, in the province of Arezzo, to Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas.

In fact, a few lunches at the old Macelleria Griglieria Giaccherini were enough to convince Enrico Garzaroli, owner of the prestigious Graycliff Hotel in Nassau, that Tuscan cuisine and the Chianina steak deserve to be tasted by his loyal customers.

Garzaroli asked Maria Pavese, owner of the butcher’s shop, to join his restaurant staff in the Bahamas to teach meat-processing on site and in particular to introduce Tuscan cuisine.

Thus, a week dedicated entirely to the cuisine of our region was born. The planned series of events will transform the Caribbean island into a Tuscan dream. Armando Varricchio, Italian Ambassador to Washington, will also be present at the event.

The week of Tuscan cuisine will commence on January 13. 15 quintals of steak have already reached Nassau, shipped by the legendary Chianina, the Vitellone Bianco dell’Appennino Centrale PGI. The event is being sponsored by Vetrina Toscana, the Tuscany Region and the Tuscan Chamber of Commerce, which promotes restaurants and shops that use local products.

Rabbit pappardelle, liver croutons and pappa al pomodoro (a thick Tuscan bread soup) will be among the main protagonists of the menu. The Bahamians have taken the celebrations seriously, closing the road in front of the well-known hotel.

The building that the Graycliff occupies was built in 1740 by the buccaneer John Howard Graysmith. Edward VIII, Wallis Simpson and Winston Churchill have all stayed here.

Today it is a five-star hotel, graced by such glitterati as Mariah Carey and Beyoncé. The Graycliff is unique in many ways: the winery, for example, is the third largest private winery in the world with over 275,000 bottles. The hotel also houses a cigar factory and even produces its own speciality chocolate in house.

The original Macelleria Giaccherini opened in 1960. The current ownership took over in 2009, fusing the butcher’s sales area with a restaurant area where the customer can have their chosen cut cooked to perfection. The shop is part of the Vetrina Toscana network.

This quintessential Tuscan experience is ready for its next evolution: “Under the sun … of the Tropics“.
