In the centre of Massa at the foot of the Malaspina castle, we rediscover the values and authenticity of what and how we once ate. It’s Osteria del Borgo, the most traditional and characteristic restaurant in Massa, a place where you naturally breathe a warm family atmosphere combined with a traditional regional cuisine that still amazes.
It is family-run by young Alessio Raffaelli and Ilaria Capanni, the Osteria’s owners. Chef Marco Mignani and Sous Chef Stella Petrocchi manage the kitchen, working with local and seasonal produce.
Among the appetisers are all-local cold cuts including the famous Lardo di conca di Colonnata. The first courses range from farro, leek and onion soups to homemade chestnut ravioli, lasagna stordellate (deconstructed lasagna), Massa dishes. Among the mains, the national tagliata (sliced steak platter) of Angus beef reigns supreme, along with roast suckling pig, guinea fowl, wild boar, roe deer, and for those who love a delicious warm main, baccala (salt cod). Finally, the desserts include homemade cakes ranging from torta della nonna (a shortcrust pastry tart with pastry cream and pine nuts), tiramisu, apple puff pastries with hot chocolate, khaki and hazelnut cake, mini montebianco, cantucci, canestrelli and many others.
Going down an old irregular staircase, you come to the enoteca with its vaulted and brick ceilings – a fascinating place where the virtues of wine satisfy all desires.
Do not miss the opportunity, in the summer, to dine outside, in the 25 seat outdoor area in one of the oldest and most beautiful streets in Massa.
