Published in Gazetta Ufficiale No. 68 of March 19, 2021, the possibility of inserting the word “Toscana” on the labels of wines with a controlled and guaranteed designation of origin (DOCG) “Morellino di Scansano” is now official and fully operational. The process that led to the modification of the production specification in order to add this optional indication on the label began just over a year ago with the favorable vote by the assembly of the Consortium for the Protection of Morellino di Scansano Wine.
“The modification of the specification was the result of intense work carried out by our Consortium alongside the Tuscan Regional Council, the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies and AVITO, the Associazione Vini Toscani Dop and Igp”, says Bernardo Guicciardini Calamai, president of the Consortium for the Protection of Morellino di Scansano Wine. “Now all producers who desire to do so, will be able to exploit the great strength of the “Toscana” brand that is well known and appreciated on international markets”.
Morellino di Scansano is a historical denomination; DOC since 1978 and DOCG since 2007. With the modification of the production rules, the geographical name “Toscana” must follow the denomination Morellino di Scansano, and be reported below the specific traditional denomination of origin, controlled and guaranteed, or the term of European Union protected designation of origin. In addition, the characters of the “Toscana” must have a lower height than the characters of the Morellino di Scansano name and have the same font (type of character), style, spacing, highlight, colour and colour intensity.
“As a Region, we immediately accepted the proposal to change the production specification of Morellino di Scansano DOCG, which is now finally defined”, said the vice president of the Tuscan Regional Council and councilor for agri-food, Stefania Saccardi. “This is another piece that will help to compose the mosaic that represents the future of one of the most important regional supply chains. It’s a future that will have to face the new challenges of environmental sustainability and resilience to climate change. Also, in this sense, the Tuscany brand can represent a formidable driver for promoting the extraordinary wealth and agrodiversity of our wines in markets around the world, and Morellino di Scansano is one of these gems”.
“We are sure that the producers of our denomination will be able to make the most of this possibility” – concludes the president of the Consortium.
